ALTERNATIVE TOURISM. New Tourist Facilities in Old Buildings
Call for Participation in the Workshop Island of Vis, Croatia 21 – 27 September 2015 Three previous Anatomy of Islands workshops dealt with key Vis topics: the locality of ancient Issa in the context of Vis town and the island of Vis, dilapidated parts of the towns of Vis and Komiža, and the issue of villages on the island of Vis. The result of these workshops is 16 projects that are student proposals for possible interventions in space. These proposals will be exhibited in the town of Vis during this year’s Symposium and Workshop. The topic of the fourth Workshop “ALTERNATIVE TOURISM – New Tourist Facilities in Old Buildings” is the logical next step in our efforts to support the creation of facilities and events that go beyond the well-known theme of “sun and sea”, and focus on new aspects that can help us make Vis a truly special place. The workshop is based on the knowledge that the existing trends of tourist development are ecologically and culturally as well as economically unsustainable in the long term. With this topic we aim to lay the foundations for a responsible development of the island; in terms of urbanism, this means the “internal reurbanisation” of existing structures. Before possible new construction of tourist facilities, we should re-examine all existing ones that can meet the new demands.
